Nickelodeon Magazine Interview

by Dede Lahman

Some rock stars have pretty cool names. Just ask Meat Loaf (also known as Marvin Lee Aday)

Q: Where did your nickname come from?

A: My dad called me Meat Loaf-two words, please -- when I was a baby. And the kids at school called me Meat Loaf all through high school and college. When I played football, my jersey said MEAT LOAF.

Q: Does anyone ever call you "Meat"?

A: Everyone calls me Meat, except my daughters, Pearl and Amanda. They call me Dad.

Q: How often do you eat meat loaf, and what do you put on it?

A: I guess I only eat it a couple times a year. My wife makes it frosted like a cake, only instead of frosting she uses mashed potatoes like to put sugar-free ketchup or mustard on it.

Meat Loaf's Meatloaf

2 cups crumbled crackers or day-old bread
3/4 cup milk
2 stalks celery, diced
2 onions, chopped
3 pounds lean ground beef
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon Tabasco
1/2 cup ketchup
3 large eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Soak the bread in the milk at the bottom of a bowl. Then add everything else. Mix with your hands and get out all the lumps. Place it in a large pan and pat it into a nice loaf shape. Spread some ketchup on the outside. Bake for one hour. Optional: After baking, frost with mashed potatoes and put back in the oven for 10 minutes. Serve with a nice salad and iced tea.
